Tour of Gallipoli 2nd Stage : Turkish Recep Ünalan and Manisaspor Conquered Kilitkale

01/10/2011  //     //  Road Bike News

In Gallipoli with its historical remains all around at every inch and its unique nature, the second stage of the Tour was held. With the wind blowing from the opposite direction, the stage of 97km started from Kilitbahir and finished at the very same point was dominated by Recep Ünalan (Manisaspor) by his timing of 02:25:07. Slovenian Blaz Jarc defended the Yellow Jersey while the Red Jersey went to Vahid Gaffari (Iran Süren Team) and the Green Jersey was won by Marco Stankoviç. (Serbia)

From the centre of Çanakkale, the group went across with the ferry and waited for the start at the front of Kilitbahir Fortress. The stage started with 51 racers. Just after the start, weak attack attempts occured but none was allowed till the mountain primes at the 20th km. At that point, with the climbing, drawbacks occured from the peloton.

At the 21.4th km of the stage, the first mountain primes were passed through. First three riders to pass were all from Iran Süren Team respectively as Vahid Gaffari, Mohammed G. Pouri and Hamid Shiri Sisan.

After passing the primes, the descent started and the velocity of the peloton increased up to 100km/h. At that point, one of the motorcycles of the organization team crashed and 10 racers including Mustafa Sayar and Hamid Shiri Sisan got involved with the accident. Mustafa Sayar tumbled down over and hurt his back again (he’d already had problems with his back) but he kept on going despite of the pain. He received help from Turkish National Team riders and they brought him into the peloton at the 33rd km.

At the 37th km, Marco Stankoviç (Serbia National Team) got away from the peloton on his own with a quite strong attack and collected the sprint primes. The remaining points were won respectively by Egor Dementyev (Ukrainia) and Mustafa Çarşı. (Manisaspor)

At the 47th km, Marco got caught by the peloton and at the 50th km, climbings started for all. After that point, attacks occured but the most important one was at the 55th km raised by Manisaspor’s strong rider Ahmet Akdilek and Alexandr Suritkovich. (Azerbaijan National Team) The super duple stood heroically against the harsh wind of Çanakkale and increased the gap with the peloton up to 1m20s but after the last 20th km, especially because Brisaspor had been working for Mert Mutlu and Mustafa Sayar, Hamid Shiri Sisan and Yellow Jersey bearer Slovenian Braz Jarc’s ambition, the distance constantly closed. The super duple could only resist the chasers till the last 10th km and got caught.

But the duple was also determined. They rested inside the peloton and didn’t give up the race and showed up at the finish sprint at the end of the stage. Getting close to Kilitkale, pedalling against the strong wind, the riders spent all of their remaining strength. Recep Ünalan (Manisaspor) who didn’t attack and rested inside the peloton during the whole stage entered the last turn at the very front and won the victory with his sprint, making Manisaspor and himself proud.

Marco Stankoviç from Serbia got the 2nd place while İsmail Aksoy (Turkish National Team) finished the 3rd.

Of other gratifying news, all of our riders who need to collect UCI points holded on the race, and gave their best including the sprint finish. Ali Rıza Tanrıverdi (Brisaspor) got the 5th, Mustafa Sayar (Konya Torku) 7th, Muammer Atalay (Konya Torku) 9th, Fatih Harmancı (Manisaspor) 12th and Ali Gülcan got the 28th places. Working quite hard during the stage, especially at the ascents, Nazım Bakırcı from Brisaspor couldn’t perform as he desired  because of his discomforts and finished the 14th.

3rd Stage:  The stage of 143km will start from Truva Ören and the finish will be in Çanakkale. The course will definitely test the riders’ performances.

The start will be at 10:00 at the Truva monument on Saturday. The cycling fans may see the riders there before the start since after the stage, they’ll stay in Çanakkale since the final will be held over there and they’ll not have a chance to see them there again. 3rd stage is the longest stage of the Tour of Gallipoli. There will be 2 prime gates, first at the 26th km, Ezine Sprint Primes, and after that climbing for the mountain primes will start.
