Tour of Qinghai Lake Nearing the Finale

Traversing the decisive stage seven all the way out of Qinghai province, the race contour is back to the normal sea level. The leader jerseys and general rankings are now principally foreseen, with stage wins are still up for grab.

Stage seven, in the middle of this year’s race, was considered the most important one, with the race altitude ascending from 2800m to 4200m in the 82km course, 131 riders started off after a 5-lap circuit, to another day in the rain and low temperature. Team Astana 2’s Yevgeniy Neponyachshiy attacked in the last 3km, followed by the race leader Pourseyedigolakhour Mirsamad (T.P.T), took stage win with average speed of 31.7km/h. The stage ended with a large gap of 33minutes between the stage winner and the last arrived, and a shuffle in the stage’s top 10 ranking, proving the difficulty of the day. Turkish team Torku Seker Spor’s Andrey Mizurov, reached home top 4, was also in the escapees.

Stage 8 was the last one in Qinghai province, meaning the riders would pedal away from the highland to the familiar sea level. However the 201km stage with one HC KOM (3869m) was not an easy one. 129 riders set off, last year’s race leader Hossein Alizadeh (Amore e Vita), desperate to win back his polka-dot jersey, captured the KOM point and passed the first intermediate sprint in the first place. He finished the day ranking 2nd in KOM and 6th in the sprint points classification. However with 7 points lower than Mirsamad, Alizadeh would see the aspirated jersey worn on his fellow Iranian Mirsamad for his bid of the KOM this year. The top-ranked sprinter of the race, Sacha Modolo (Bardiani) surged to his 3rd stage win after the peloton engulfed the leading duet of Matt Brammeier (Champion System) and Tim Mikelj (Sava) at 500m to go.

Stage 9 started after the rest day in Zhang’ye (Gansu province). Teams fired attacks and increased pace with the rested legs. However it was another day of victory for Sacha Modolo. This man for flat course had the help of his lead-out man Filippo Fortin setting a fast pace in front of the peloton from 2km to 800m, Modolo rushed to his 4th stage win and secured his place in the sprint points classification.

“I have finished the adjectives to describe the outstanding work did by my teammates”- says Modolo at the arrival. He said the team worked perfectly together and controlled the day without a mistake.

The Tour of Qinghai Lake’s last KOM (Cat.3) was situated at stage 10, the 191-km course controlled by Astana 2, Bardiani-CSF and the leader team T.P.T, no escapees survived. The headwind was one of the challenges for the riders, it was French team La Pomme Marseille’s top rider Benjamin Giraud who took home the stage win.

The final three stages of this year’s Tour of Qinghai Lake will be held in Ningxia Muslim Autonomous Region and back to Gansu for the wrap-up. Attacks and exciting mass sprints will be expected from the flat routes. Time to watch the fast sprinters!
