Tour of Qinghai Lake: Mountain Stages Eliminating Riders

The race reputed for its difficulty, Tour of Qinghai Lake (TDQL) has seen riders biding good-bye to it, as the two consecutive stages of over than 200km challenged riders in the Cat.H KOM climbs and changeable weather. On Saturday, only 131 riders (154 at stage 1) could pedal their way to stage 7, heading north of the Qinghai Lake into another Tibetan town of the province.

Some of the highlights in the past stages were firstly at stage 5, the 14-minute gap was opened between the escapees and the peloton because of the cold and rainy weather (9 degrees) on top of the head wind, the peloton, covering only 35km in the first hour, let go of the four escapees Tilegen Maidos (Astana 2), Floris Goesinnen (Drapac Pro Cycling), Oleksandr Polivoda (Atlas Personal-Jakroo) and RTS’s Chang Wei Kei. Ukrainian national champion Oleksandr Polivoda and Drapac’s TDQL leader Floris Goesinnen followed by Green Jersey contender Sacha Modolo (Bardiani Valvole-CSF Inox) stepped onto the podium for stage wins.

Iranian team Tabriz Petrochemical (T.P.T) continued their control of the familiar “home” race, with Mirsamad Pourseyedigolakhour the current race leader wearing Yellow, Blue and Polka-dot jerseys. The climbing team’s strategy is to win the race by protecting the leader and prevent former teammate and 2012 TDQL overall winner Hossein Alizadeh’s rise on the KOM ranking, as well as fully set the pace of the race, regardless of the challenging line-up of Pro Tour and Pro Continental teams waiting to ravage their chances of victories.

At stage 6, the contour finished the long day after conquering the race’s highest-ever KOM point of 4120m. With 8 Cat.H KOM climbs, this year’s TDQL is known “as difficult as Tour de France”, the riders rolled their wheels along the undulating hills while T.P.T cruising at the head of the bunch. The 203km stage was won by UHC’s Robert Fuerster in style, with Massimo Graziato (Lampre Merida) and established sprinter Sergiy Grechyn (Torku Seker Spor) on the podium for their 2nd and 3rd place.

Turkey’s all-rounder team Torku Seker Spor, has adjusted well to this race. Sergiy Grechyn finished stage 6 in the second place and eighth in General Individual Classification and David De La Fuente became second in GC. The team took the 4th place in Team Classification at the end of stage 8.

TDQL is nearing the end of first half of the race, stage 7 was the last stage running in Qinghai province. From stage 8 on, the contour started heading eastwards to less hilly routes. We are expecting to see sprinters and jersey contenders surging to the stage podiums.
