Tour of Turkey – Final Stage Winner is Marc Cavendish and the TUR Leader is Adam Yates of Orica-GreenEdge

04/05/2014  //     //  Road Bike News

On the last day of the 50th edition of Tour of Turkey, the cyclists experienced the 121 km-long İstanbul-İstanbul stage which consists of 8 laps. There was a Sprint Prime at km 29 and a Beauties of Turkey Prime at km 74. High tempo and continuous attacks were expected before the start.

After the start, when the contenders approached the unique scenery of the Bosphorus Bridge, Mattia POZZO(NRI) and David DE LA FUENTE(TRK) attacked and opened a gap of 15 seconds, but the peloton didn’t let them go any further. Caja Rural was one of the most active teams of today.

After km 20, numerous attacks came from the main group but no escape group was formed. Still, the ones to collect the Sprint Prime points at km 29 were Tomas KIENDYS(CCC), Mas Luis MAS BONET(CJR) and Jai CRAWFORD(DPC), respectively.

Finally, 79 km to go, an escape group of 7, which included Tomas KIENDYS(CCC), Valeria CONTI(LAM), Lorente ARAMENDIA(CJR), Paolo COLONNA(BAR), Nazım BAKIRCI(TRK), Youcef REGUIGUI(MTN) and Leal MEGIAS(TNN), was successfully formed. They opened a gap of 35 seconds.

66 km to go, Omega Pharma – Quick-Step and Cannondale squads were controlling the tempo of the peloton.

Since there are no KOM Primes at this last stage, Marc DE MAAR of UnitedHealthCare, had guaranteed to wear the Red jersey at the podium today.

50 km to go, the peloton was keeping the pace high so that the escapees can’t increase it anymore.

The Beauties of Turkey Prime points at km 74 were taken by Lorente ARAMENDIA(CJR), Tomas KIENDYS(CCC) and Torku Şekerspor’s Nazım BAKIRCI, respectively. With these results, Mattia POZZO(NRI) deserved to win the White Jersey.

When the cyclists entered the last 3 laps, 35 to go, Omega Pharma-Quick-Step and Cannondale set a higher pace and decreased the gap to 15 seconds. 18 km to go, Caja Rural’s Lorente ARAMENDIA tried a solo-attack, but Tomas KIENDYS(CCC) and Paolo COLONNA(BAR) followed him, while Nazım BAKIRCI(TRK) and the other escapees were caught by the main group. Before entering the last lap, the gap between the escape group of 3 and the peloton was 19 seconds. 10 km to go, this group was caught too and the expected bunch sprint finish was near then.

Astana, Omega Pharma-Quick-Step, Lampre Merida and Cannondale trains were struggling to catch a good position. 5 km to go, Orica GreenEdge team came to the forefront in order to make sure that Adam YATES keeps the Turquoise Jersey and to prevent him be involved in a crash.

Orica GreenEdge brought the Turquoise Jersey safely and this ensured that Adam YATES became the GC leader. For the sprint finish of the stage, Omega Pharma –Quick-Step train was heading to the finish at the forefront of the peloton. When entering the last km, Astana’s Andrea GUARDINI and Cannondale’s Elia VIVIANI were pedalling just behind CAVENDISH, but at the last 100 metres their effort wasn’t enough to stop him and Mark CAVENDISH became the winner of the final stage of Tour of Turkey. Elia Viviani became the runner-up and Andrea GUARDINI was the third.

Tour of Turkey’s 50th edition was completed today, with Orica GreenEdge’s Adam YATES on the podium with the Turquoise Jersey. The Green Jersey (Sprint points) was donned by Mark CAVENDISH, the Red Jersey (KOM points) by Marc DE MAAR and the White Jersey (Beauties of Turkey points) by Mattio POZZO.

The one and only Turkish cycling team that is given the right to participate in TUR, Torku Şekerspor, succeeded to bring Juan Jose COBO to the 6th place at   General Classification.

Orica GreenEDGE’s Adam YATES commented on the race: “I won the Tour. My ranking was already good, but nothing was guaranteed until the end of the last stage. I surely had stress. I won the Tour and the stage without any problems or crashes and I earned the Turquoise Jersey. I don’t have big dreams for the future. Cycling is a very difficult sport and I have to work very hard. I have to be realistic. Of course I have many things to learn and do. I was too tired last night so I couldn’tthink much. Imagine, you are just one second ahead of the runner-up. How would you feel? You can win or lose any second! Me and my brother, Simon Yates, who was involved in a crash and fell, are trying to do good things. He could even have won the TUR if he hadn’t broken his collar bone. Will this victory change anything in my career? I don’t think so. I’ll keep going the same way. Working very hard is essential. We see very good sprinters at Tour of Turkey. If the team works well, there’s no problem. I can say that media is very interested in us, you make us sweat. I think everything was perfect. I’ll pariticipate at the California Tour and keep winning stages there too.”
