TUR has only 2 stages that don’t include any KOM primes, including the 2nd one which was completed today. Thus, today’s stage was the one and only stage for the sprinters who wanted to show off.

Today, before the start, it started to rain in Alanya and this caused some rumours like the start would be cancelled. But the rain stopped 10 minutes to the start and the race started from Alanya Harbor at 10:50 on wet roads with 153 cyclists for the second day struggle. Mark Cavendish, who won yesterday’s stage and got the GC lead, started today wearing the Turquoise Jersey. There were no serious attacks in the peloton at the beginning.

After the first 30 minutes, the first escape group was formed, including Ahmet Örken too. This group of 5 opened the gap to 4 minutes at these moments.

Nicola Boem (CSF Bardiani), Pavel Charucki (CCC Polsat Polkowice), Martijn Verschoor (Team Novo Nordisk), Mattia Pozzo (Neri Sottoli) and Torku Şeker Spor’s Ahmet Örken were today’s 5 escapees. Örken, who’s aiming for the White Jersey, was expected to be in the escape group today, because he couldn’t manage to win the Beauties of Turkey Prime at Alanya Castle yesterday.  Just before the Beauties of Turkey Prime of the second stage which was on km 58, given to Manavgat Falls, the escapees increased the gap up to 4 minutes.

When the group approached the Beauties of Turkey Prime gate, the public was enthusiasted and the cyclists who passed were;

1–Mattia Pozzo

2–Martijn Verschoor

3–Ahmet Örken

The race kept going in high pace and 50 kms  to go the average speed of the main group was around 49 km/h. At km 120, the gap dropped down to 40 seconds then it increased again, but the escapees were caught once again.

The Sprint Points were collected by 1. Pozzo, 2. Verschoor, 3. Boem  in Antalya.

25 kms to go, when Greipel approached the team car and got carbohydrate-rich drinks, you could see that he was not very ambitious for today’s finish.

Ahead of the main group, Belkin and Omega Pharma QuickStep teams started to take the pace higher for the expected bunch sprint finish and the gap decreased even faster and 55 kms to go it was only 40 seconds.

18 kms to go, the teams started pacing up for their sprinters. After the Sprint Primes at Beldibi were shared by Gianni Meersman, Mattia Pozzo, Mark Cavendish, the Omega and Cannondale trains took place on the screen. OmegaPharma QuickStep was ahead when the peloton came to the last 400 metres and the sprint train was formed again for Cavendish. The escapees, by the way, were caught at 16 km to go to finish.

Meanwhile, Katusha and Lampre-Merida teams were also trying to get some space ahead, but Cavendish won one of the least exciting sprint finished we’ve seen so far, very easily.

Mark Cavendish, who’s racing for the first time in Turkey,  once again proved his rivals that he was here and wouldn’t give  them any chance to win. At the end of the day, wearing the Turquoise Jersey once again, he explained that the direction of the wind had changed and this was the key factor to his victory today. But he’s expected to lose the GC winner status at tomorrow’s mountain stage. He commented on today: “Omega Pharma QuickStep did an incredible job, the last 10 kms they cycled to catch the escape group. At the last kms they formed a perfect sprint train. It was a difficult day and the wind was blowing towards us strongly. Mark Renshaw and Alessandro Petacchi carried me to the finish perfectly. I’m very happy to have won a second stage here. Tomorrow’s stage is not suitable for our team, we are a sprinters team, but still we’ll do our best.”

He added, for his target at the Tour de France, “My performance was not good enough. I’m trying to make it better by attending many races.
