Tur of Turkey (25)

After the Fethiye-Marmaris stage, which Mark Cavendish won pretty easily yesterday in a sprint finish, today there was the 180 km-long Marmaris-Turgutreis  stage, which was expected to end up with a sprint finish as well. Today, unlike yesterday, it didn’t rain but still it was windy.

Tur of Turkey (23)

The Çetibeli climb (CAT 3) at km 4 was the sign of an early escape group that would be formed just after the start. The first cyclist to collect the KOM prime points became Marc DE MAAR(UHC), and Nico SIJMENS(WGG) and Mirko TEDESCHI(NRI) followed him at the second and third places, respectively.

When the main group came to km 7, the attacks started to come. At km 15, the escape group of 9 opened the gap with the main group to 2 minutes.

The escapees were:

Marc DE MAAR(UHC)

Nico SIJMENS(WGG)

Mirko TEDESCHI(NRI)

Mattia POZZO (NRI)

Nicola BOEM (BAR)

Matthias KRIZEK (CAN)

Fabricio FERRARI (CJR)

Lachlan NORRIS (DPC)

Dennis VAN NIEKERK (MTN)

Tur of Turkey (27)

The second KOM prime gate at km 34 was first passed by Marc DE MAAR again. He guaranteed tha Red Jersey again at the end of the day with 12 points. After DE MAAR, Matthias KRIZEK (CAN), Nicola BOEM (BAR) and Lachlan NORRIS (DPC) followed him to earn the KOM points. Meanwhile, the main group was 4 minutes behind the escapees.

When the gap increased to 4’20”, Omega Pharma – Quick-Step and Cofidis teams came to the forefront to increase the tempo. At km 53, the sprint primes were collected by Nicola BOEM (BAR), Dennis VAN NIEKERK (MTN) and Nico SIJMENS(WGG).

Last 79 km to go, the gap dropped down to 2’40”.

50 km to go, the gap was 2’10”. Luca Paolini of Katusha, who preferred staying at the back of the peloton since the beginning of TUR 2014, pedalled at the forehead of the peloton today from start to end.

When the cyclists approached Bodrum, 30 km to go to finish, Cofidis, Omega Pharma-Quick-Step and Luca PAOLINI was keeping the pace high and the gap dropped back to 1’20”. The escapees started their attacks for the Beauties of Turkey Prime.

20 km to go, Mattia POZZO passed the Beauties of Turkey Prime gate easily and guaranteed to don the White Jersey at theend of the day. After this prime, the Omega Pharma – Quick-Step train led by Mark Cavendish took their positions at the forehead of the peloton, paced up and decreased the gap to 40 seconds.

10 km to go, Lotto Belisol’s Adam HANSEN solo-attacked. Meanwhile the escapees were caught by the main group. At the last 8 kms, where the descent started, MTB-Qhubeka’s Youcef REGUIGUI(MTN) tried a solo-attack, but the bunch didn’t let him. Near the end of the descent, Miraç KAL(TRK), Merhawi KUDUS(MTN) and Marco CANOLA(BAR) attacked. But Cofidis and Omega-Pharma teams maintained the controled back again and didn’t give a chance to the escaping trio. At thelast 2 kms, the peloton was approaching the expected bunch sprint finish.

Belkin,Omega Pharma-Quick-Step and Cannondale paced up and breakaways started in the main group. In the last km, Mark Cavendish’s train couldn’t manage to organize like they did in the previous days. 100 metres to go, Mark Cavendish attacked to win, but then Elia VIVIANI of Cannondale overtook Cavendish and didn’t let him dominate the TUR and won the stage today. Mark Cavendish(OPQ) had to stay at the 2nd place and Kristian SBARAGLI(MTN) was the third.

Tur of Turkey (28)

At the end of the day, while Rein TAARAMAE(Cof) kept the Turquoise Jersey, Marc DE MAAR donned the Red Jersey and Mattia POZZO kept the White Jersey.

Viviani commented after the stage:

Tour of Turkey has a special meaning for me, because I had won the 7th stage in 2010 in my first year in cycling as a professional.

He answered the question: “You managed to win against Cavendish. How do you feel?

Today was easier for me, because it was a more difficult stage. The previous stages were flat, I couldn’t have overtook Cavendish. My team carried me very well. I had a good position just behind Cavendish. I feel I’m ready for Giro.

I will focus and concentrate on Giro from now on. I owe today’s victory not only to my good form, but also to my hard work, personal effort and experience.

In 2010, I won that stage by overtaking Viconti. I was quite lucky. It was rainy and there was a crash at the bend. But today it was a real sprint. I contented myself with the runner-up position, but now I am very happy. I earn more experience each and every year and I work harder.”
