Though the scorching hot weather has come unexpectedly early to the south of Turkey this year, the race started in a partly cloudy weather and this made the start even better. Besides, the good quality asphalt road between Alanya-Gazipasa, provided a comfortable stage for the cyclists.

Mark Cavendish (OPQ) commented at the press meeting at the end of the stage:

The team supports me very well in all aspects. Today I wasn’t feeling well at the first hours of the race, but my performance got better later. Towards the finish, I saw that my performance was getting better. It was a good finish.

I was very excited to take a start in Turkey for the first time. I thought I might not be able to win but then my performance got better. I compete in Turkey for the first time. Honestly, I was excited. My teammates worked very well for me and I tried to keep up with them at the sprint. We were a few people to go into the sprint. Furthermore, there was a headwind, still, we did a good job as a team all together. Frankly, I had both rivals and teammates who were in better condition then me. I got my first win after my illness at a race that I attend for the first time. I am so delighted and happy.”

He answered the question about what he would do with all the bananas that were given to him as a gift at the end of the stage: “I don’t know, I don’t even like bananas!

Mark Cavendish who has a total of 43 stage wins in Tour de France, Giro and Vuelta, more than 100 victories and is chosen the best sprinter of all times by the Tour de France, made a joke before leaving the press room, saying “See you tomorrow!
