Tour of Gallipoli Stage 3 : Recep Ünalan Grabs the Yellow Jersey
3rd Stage of the Tour of Gallipoli was held between Troja – Ören – Ezine – Bayramiç Etili Çanakkale. The stage of 143km was dominated by Recep Ünalan (Manisaspor Cycling Team) as he won the stage with 04:03:10 and the Yellow Jersey as well.
It was pretty obvious that today, all teams and remaining 42 riders would be playing their cards with all they had. With the start of the 3rd stage, the peloton rode together during the first 10km with constant pace. After the 10th km, attacks were expected, but none occured. The peloton climbed together and again attacks didn’t occur. For the first time, the peloton’s behaviour was unusual. The group was leaded by Konya Torku, Iran Süren and Slovenia team riders but they didn’t increase the pace. Meanwhile, a drawback occured and an Azerbaijani rider got behind the peloton.
After the 18th km, the peloton formed an echelon after the fast descent but they got together again at the 22th km. They approached the sprint primes as a group and at the last 400m an attack group of 7 arose and Turkish National Team rider (originally from Brisaspor) İsmail Aksoy won the sprint primes at the 26th km. Remaining points were divided between Hamid Shiri Sisan (Iran Süren Team) and Serhat Sert (Konya Torku Şeker Spor) respectively.
After the sprint primes, the peloton got back together one more time. They rode as a group till the 34th km and attack groups of 5-8 riders tried to run away time to time and could increase the gaps up to 15-20s but the peloton caught them all back into the group. At the 34th km, Mustafa Çarşı (Manisaspor Cycling Team) crashed due to a hole near the road and tumbled down over but thankfully he didn’t have serious injuries but the favorite sprinter (especially for tomorrow’s stage) Mustafa Çarşı had to opt out the race.
At the 36th km, Esad Hasanoviç (Serbia National Team) attacked and weren’t chased by the peloton but a chasing group of 7-8 arose and they increased the gap with the peloton to 20s. Meanwhile the Serbian increased the distance up to 01:17 at the 45th km. After that point, climbings started and the group was expected to catch him but as a tactical behavior, Brisaspor didn’t try hard and let the other teams do the job but since none of other teams worked, the group pedaled as they were at a sightseeing. The Serbian, with a pretty good performance increased the gap constantly. At the 50th km the distance was 03:45 and at the 58th km it increased up to 06:35. As attacks were expected approaching the mountain primes, none occured to catch Esad Hasanoviç. It was also quite impossible if they’d tried to… At the 62nd km, Sergy Shumilov (Ukrainia National Team) attacked to catch Esad but he couldn’t get close to him further than 4:30. (the gap between the main peloton and the lead was 9:05) The Ukrainian was the second one to collect the mountain primes after Esad Hasanoviç and they were followed by Slovenian Blaz Furidi and the red jersey bearer Iranian Vahid Gaffari respectively.
As the descent started, the group started to take it serious and paced up. Brisa started to work for the group and they constantly closed the gap. As from the 90th km the chasers paced up and attacks arose while the Serbian started to slow down at the 96th km.
From the 110th km, an attack group of 9 occured including Blaz Jarc (Yellow jersey), Blaz Furdi, Egor Dementiyev (Ukrainia), Mert Mutlu (Brisaspor), Ali Rıza Tanrıverdi (Konya Torku), Nazım Bakırcı, Vlademir Koev, Recep Ünalan (Manisaspor) and Andi Baj.
The attack group worked really hard and increased the distance up to 3:00 and caught the Serbian Esad Hasanoviç before the descent. With him joining, a leading group of 10 was formed. The hardworkers of the group were Brisaspor riders Nazım and Mert, Blaz Jarc and Blaz Furidi.
At the last 4.3km Blaz Jarc and Recep Ünalan (Manisaspor) got away from the group of 10 and increased their velocity up to 60kmph. Meanwhile Mert Mutlu, who was tired chasing the Yellow Jersey got tired and got behind the group at the last 3 km. Blaz Jarc and Recep pedaled together as at the remaining 500m Manisaspor rider Recep Ünalan attacked and finished the 3rd stage of 143km at 04:03:10 and won the stage victory. With the bonification points he gained, he also grabbed the Yellow Jersey from Jarc, making his team proud.
Slovenian rider Jarc finished second with 04:03:34 and Ali Rıza Tanrıverdi, the Yellow Jersey Bearer of the Tour of Marmara finished 3rd.
For a Turkish rider to win the challenge with a pro rider riding for a team like Netapp was gratifying. With Ali Rıza getting up to the podium, we had 2 Turkish riders up there.
After the 2nd stage, Turkish Champion Brisaspor, riding without foreigners rose up to the first place at the team classification.
After the 3rd stage Recep Ünalan has the Yellow Jersey, Ukrainian Egor Dementyev has the Green Jersey and Vahid Gaffari (Iran Süren) has the Red mountain Jersey.
4th Stage: It’ll be the last stage of the Tour of Gallipoli. The last challenge of 90km will start at 9:00 at the front of Çanakkale Gençlik Spor.
The 4th and last stage between Çanakkale – Lapseki – Çardak – Çanakkale is expected to have a sprint finish as the riders will climb up to maximum 100m.
